ARTIST ROSTER
Scott Bomar
Musician/Film Composer/Producer/Engineer
In high school he began performing with groups at Memphis area clubs and formed the group Impala. With their `60s instrumental sound, the group toured nationally and released five albums. Impala's version of the Henry Mancini theme "Experiment in Terror" is featured in George Clooney's directorial debut, CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND. The group also wrote and performed the original score for John Michael McCarthy's exploitation film, TEENAGE TUPELO and has had songs placed in many feature films, film trailers, TV shows and ads.
Simultaneously, Bomar gained prominence as a bassist, backing legendary Stax artists like Rufus and Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Sir Mack Rice, William Bell, Sun Records pioneer Rosco Gordon, and jazz guitar great and former Ray Charles sideman Calvin Newborn, both in studio session and on the road.
In 2005, Bomar composed the score for Craig Brewer's award winning film, HUSTLE & FLOW, for which Bomar has received much critical acclaim for his Memphis soul meets hip hop score. Bomar returned in 2006 to collaborate with the film makers of HUSTLE & FLOW as Executive Music Producer and composer of the film, BLACK SNAKE MOAN.
In 2003 Bomar served as musical director for a segment of Martin Scorsese's PBS series THE BLUES. In 2005, Bomar appeared as the subject of an episode of the BET series, THE MUSICMAKERS. He also performed at London's Barbican Arts Centre as part of the IT CAME FROM MEMPHIS music and film series with his group, The Bo-Keys, a soul-infused instrumental group he formed in the late `90s featuring veterans from Stax/Volt Records, including Isaac Hayes' sidemen Charles 'Skip' Pitts and Willie Hall, who backed the Blues Brothers in concert and on film. Bomar used the Bo-Keys, including Marvell Thomas and Ben Cauley of the original Bar-Kays to record the score for HUSTLE & FLOW. The success of their critically acclaimed album, The Royal Sessions, landed Bomar the opportunity to work on Al Green's 2003 Grammy nominated comeback album, I Can't Stop, as assistant engineer. In 2005, Scott joined Green's Producer Willie Mitchell again on the Al Green recording Everything's Okay. The Bo-Keys can also be heard performing the song, "Kick It" on the film and soundtrack for the Paramount animated feature, BARNYARD directed by Steve Oedekerk and and will be appearing in the upcoming film SOUL MEN, performing on-screen with stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac.
He currently just finished the score for the film, GOSPEL HILL, directed by Giancarlo Esposito and is producing a follow-up to The Bo-Keys The Royal Sessions. You can also hear tracks from The Bo-Keys on the movie soundtrack to Soul Men relased on Stax Records on November 4th. Also featured on the soundtrack are Isaac Hayes, Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, Sharon Jones and the DapKings to name a few.
