Tropical Goth
With a unique sound that draws upon post-punk and new wave, while incorporating up-beat melodies of the Caribbean, Black Flamingo creates harmony through opposition. Black Flamingo’s music is within the vein of dark wave, while straddling the borders of pop, which sets them apart through the unusual combination of the founding members’ musical backgrounds.
In 2010, Kimi Recor (formerly of Lilofee), paired with Amberlie Bankoff aka Ammo, (formerly of Teenage Talking Cars), to create music suitable for a ‘luau in the graveyard.’ From the start of this collaboration, the two easily wrote and recorded nearly an entire album before a proper band was assembled. Recor’s booming voice and signature ballad songwriting paired naturally with Ammo’s dark melodies and climbing bass lines to create music that pushes the threshold of contemporary conventions. After adding guitarist Chris Vick, keyboardist Mareesa Stertz and dual drummers Alex Posell and Poul Johansen, Black Flamingo were off and running; constantly booking shows.
Black Flamingo achieves a unique sound through the intertwining of pop, post-punk and dark wave, all of which is the result of the varied musical backgrounds of each band member. From many musical schools of thought spawns not quite a cult, but simply, Tropical Goth.a
